Shawnee Hills
The Shawnee Hills AVA, created in 2006, is one of two AVAs in the state of Illinois. Located at the southern end of the state, near the junction of the Mississippi and Ohio Rivers, there are currently 20 wineries in this zone, in the forest named for the hills. Vineyards are planted on rolling hills; there is a total of 300 acres planted. Most varieties are hybrids such as Chambourcin, Norton and Chardonel, while there is also some Cabernet Franc planted. A few producers also release fortified wines such as port and sherry.
