Wine used in churches for sacramental purposes. Producers of these wines received special leniency in the U.S. during prohibition, and were allowed to continue wine production throughout the period. Production of altar wines and sales to the church were the only things that kept several California wineries open during prohibition and able to resume making high quality table wines when prohibition was repealed.
