Torrontes is a white wine from Argentina; the grape is the country's most widely planted white variety. The wines are light to medium-bodied, almost always un-oaked with flavors of honey, pear, orange blossoms and lychee. They do not age well, so consume them in their youth with foods such as shellfish or lighter poultry dishes.
There is also a vine called Torrontes in Spain, but it has yet to be proven that this is the same grape as that in Argentina.
If you have ever been inside the cold room of a flower shop or been in a springtime mountain meadow of flowers, a similar scent memory awaits you when you inhale the sweet, vibrant aromatics found in a glass of well-made Torrontés white wine. The real surprise hits you, when you swallow this wine and realize that it is bone dry And exhibits a lovely ocean mist salinity. At the table, consider pairing this with delicately flavored meats or fish, a sautéed shrimp dish with mild coconut curry sauce would be delightful. For the vegan consider a subtly flavored Teriyaki Seitan.
