Wine: Best Producers: Canadian Red

Canada's northerly location means that red grape vines must be carefully placed to give them a good chance of reaching optimum ripeness--much like some of Europe's fine wine regions. Red wine will vary markedly in quality, depending on the general success of the vintage. Such are the vagaries of climate that wineries often need to plant sturdier hybrid varietals such as Marechal Foch and Gamay Noir, in case their Merlot and Pinot Noir fail to ripen.

Ontario, and more specifically the Niagara Peninsula, account for the bulk of red wine production; however, the naturally warmer and temperate Okanagan Valley in BC has shown potential for producing classic varietal wines such as Merlot and Pinot Noir, if early efforts are any indication.
