Dusty garnet color. Aromas of frozen raspberry concentrate, smoked leather, mulch, and pickled fruit with a silky, tangy, dry medium body and a warming, medium-long cherry juice, candied and pickled black olive, and orange peel finish. A crunchy, fresh red wine to enjoy with a chill.

For the wine consumer jaded by the chocolate and vanilla worlds of Cabernet and Chardonnay, a little diversity in the nightly wine selection can offer a welcome respite. Though hardly the "next new thing," a number of regional specialties around the country are waiting to surprise the unsuspecting wine tourist and provide a welcome change of pace.

A number of these wines are made in states such as Wisconsin or Missouri, from grapes such as Marechal Foch, Frontenac and Marquette; they are idiosyncratic with tangy flavors and moderate tannins; they are meant for early consumption.
