Wine in Switzerland remains a mystery as less than 5% of the total production is exported. However, there are numerous examples of excellent wines made in the country. Most of the grapes here have been brought in from neighboring countries, such as Germany and France and include Riesling, Sauvignon Blanc and Sylvaner for whites and Pinot Noir and Merlot for reds. The whites in general have received much notoriety, as they are quite intesne in their aromatics and have very good natural acidity, providing excellent structure. Reds also have good levels of acidity and are somewhat herbal in style, much like northern Italian reds. Quality is very good with these wines overall; however the prices are relatively expensive; this ensures for now at least, that Swiss wines will remain a bit of a mystery outside the country.
