About South African Beer

Given the Dutch and British influence in South Africa over the past few centuries, it is not surprising that there is a healthy beer industry in the country. Brewers can also be thankful for the fact that per capita consumption is among the highest in all of Africa. Today, beer production in the country accounts for one-third of the total in the continent.

One large brewery accounts for most of the total production, while a few dozen microbreweries have been established in recent years. The most common style of beer is pale lager.
