Tuscany Chianti Classico

Chianti Classico is one of the world's most familiar and well-loved red wines. It is produced from a zone in central Tuscany between the cities of Florence to the north and Siena to the south.

The principal grape in Chianti Classico is Sangiovese; a minimum of 80% of this grape must be included in a Chianti Classico, unlike other Chiantis from nearby zones. Other grapes that van be included in the blend for a Chianti Classico include traditional varieties such as Canaiolo and Colorino or even international varieties such as Merlot and Cabernet Sauvignon. While a small percentage of local white varieties were once mandated for inclusion in a Chianti Classico, those white grapes are currently not permitted in the blend.

Chainti Classicos tend to be medium-bodied, while a Riserva offering (aged longer in wood) is richer. Most examples of Chianti Classico are enjoyable upon release and drink well for three to seven years; the Riserva offerings can age for a decade or more.

The wines have a pleasant red cherry flavor profile along with tart acidity and a light cedar, earthy finish. They pair well with foods such as poultry, lighter red meats and pastas with marinara sauce.
