Vineyards were first planted in Mexico in the late 18th century, but it is only in the last thirty years that there has been much of a wine industry, as small as it is. The best wines are from Baja California in northwestern Mexico; as this area is close to the Pacific Ocean, the temperate climate allows for proper ripening conditions, unlike much of Mexico, which is too hot for proper viticulture. The best wines are the reds, including Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Syrah and Tempranillo; top whites include Chardonnay, Sauvignon Blanc and Viognier. Quality is very good on few upper end wines; most wines are good, but lack structure for long term aging. Once can imagine that with time, overall quality will increase.
