Serve in a White Wine Glass
While Chardonnay and Riesling are the two most famous varieties planted in Australia, there are other important whites. Semillon, especially from the Hunter Valley is a notable white, medium-bodied and dry with unique flavors of melon and fig. Sauvignon Blanc is planted in large number in the Margaret River and Adelaide Hills sections and produces a rich, lightly herbal wine.
Muscat has become more widely planted in Australia the past decade, thanks in part to the worldwide craze for this aromatic white. The Rutherglen Muscats, deep amber in color and with an almost syrupy texture, are quite famous.
In smaller numbers, Pinot Gris, Viognier and Verdelho, this last a simple white for early quaffing, round out production of white wine in Australia.
