There are little pockets of other red varieties grown throughout the US. In California, Italian varieties such as Barbera, Grignolino, Primitivo and Sangiovese can be found (the later most famously at the Atlas Peak winery in Napa). Several producers in California produce stand alone versions of such Bordeaux varieties as Petit Verdot, Cabernet Franc and Malbec, while Tempranillo, best known as the principal red variety of Spain’s Rioja, can also be found in small plantings in California.

Rhone varieties have become a specialty in California, especially in the Paso Robles area. Among the varieties planted here are Grenache, Cinsault, Carignano (or Carignane) and Mourvèdre.

New York State works with hybrid grapes, both French and American. Among these are Baco Noir and Marechal Foch; these are produced in small quantities.
