Best American Ale & Best English Ale Reviews

Full Sail Brewing Co. Amber Ale
90 points
Medium dark copper color. Aromas and flavors of smoked nuts and fennel, dried jerky, granola, and caramelized cheese rind with a supple, vibrant, frothy, dryish medium-to-full body and a tingling, medium-long tropical fruits, pepper, and radicchio finish. A charming amber ale that will shine at the table or on it’s own.
Narragansett Brewing Company Fresh Catch Blonde Ale
88 points
Brilliant light gold color. Aromas and flavors of grilled mangoes, lemon herb bread, garlic and onion, and grape jam with a supple, tangy, effervescent, dry-yet-fruity medium body and a smooth, charming, breezy white grapefruit, red oak lettuce, orange blossom cream, and plain wafer finish. A nice golden ale with a splash of modern hops.
Vancouver Island Brewing Pipers Pale Ale
86 points
Minutely hazy deep amber color. Herbal aromas and flavors of hard bread sticks and pretzels, grilled corn with salted butter, and butter pecan ice cream with a supple, racy, fizzy, dryish medium body and a tingling, brisk bitter greens, charred nuts, and baking chocolate finish. A fine English Style Pale Ale with a nice dry finish.
Old Speckled Hen English Style Fine Ale
85 points
Minutely hazy copper color. Aromas and flavors of bit of honey candy, frosted pineapple and banana cakes, buttered strawberry biscuit with honey, and dry eraser marker with a silky, soft, finely carbonated, dry-yet-fruity light-to-medium body and a polished, interesting, medium-long lettuces, praline, and cream finish. An English style pale ale with great fine texture and superb drinkability.
Top of the Hill Restaurant & Brewery Rams Head IPA
83 points
Clear golden yellow color. Aromas and flavors of smoked cheese, grilled romaine and citrus, and lit cigarette paper with a supple, lively, effervescent, light body and a tingling, compelling, medium-long grilled root vegetables and grapefruit, pepper, rapini, and orange tea finish. A very bitter brew for hopheads.
Port Huron Brewing Company Honey Blonde Ale
81 points
Dusty deep amber color. Aromas of cashew brittle and buttermilk, butterscotch syrup on toast, bit of honey candy, and wax candy with a supple, effervescent, fruity medium body and a breezy caramel cake with sour cream frosting, granola, and buttermilk dressed salad finish. An odd fruity ale for the table.
