USA: White Meritage

What is White Meritage?
Meritage was the term (chosen in a contest...no kidding) given to U.S. wines made from a traditional blend of Bordeaux style varietals that can vary from year to year. The red meritage category, a blend of Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Cabernet Franc, etc. is better known, as wines such as Opus One and Dominus have caught the public’s fancy. There is a white side to the meritage coin, however. White meritage refers to a blend of Sauvignon Blanc and Semillon, which is then barrel fermented. The rich, rounded flavors of Semillon are used to round out the snappy and vibrant Sauvignon, while the barrel aging adds a layer of oaky complexity. The resultant wines are a bit like Chardonnays that are not quite as round in the mouth with a firm structure and a sturdy, vibrant finish.
