Italy: Regional Italy: Italian Merlot
What about Italian Merlot?
Merlot is widely grown around Italy, and is by no means confined to Tuscany where it is often used in Super Tuscan blends (for top Tuscan Merlots refer to the Super Tuscan Best Producer list). While many Italian regions have recently incorporated Merlot in an imitation of the Super Tuscan movement, northeastern Italy has actually been working with the varietal for the better part of the last century. Styles range from heady, oaky, New World-style wines in the south to herbaceous, varietally pure, Bordeaux-accented wines in Alto-Adige, the Veneto, and Friulithe hotbed of high-quality, and often good value, Merlot production.
