94 • Manzoni Estate 2007 Estate, Syrah, Santa Lucia Highlands $24.
Opaque garnet violet color. Vibrant aromas of fresh oregano, mocha, and crispy bacon follow through on a round, satiny entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with bright tangy cherry and berry fruit and a long, cocoa and spice accented fade with seamless tannins. A deliciously balanced and decadently rich syrah for sipping or filet mignon. (tasted on Dec-07-2009)

Deeo purple color. Lightly brett influenced aromas of black olive skin, nuts, leather and singed berry creme brulee follow thorugh on a round, silky entry to a dryish medium-to-full body with complex layers of flavor and generous cedar and spice accented fade with smooth tannins. An intriguing, slightly rustic and Euro styled syrah that should do well at the table with game. (tasted on Jan-07-2010)

Deep garnet violet color. Earthy aromas of herb stems, tomatoes on the vine, clay, and dried mulberries follow through on a soft, supple entry to a dryish medium body with supple balance and good integration. Finishes with a silky white chocolate and peppery spice accented. An interesting roller coaster of a wine, with an earthy Old world character that in the end is a very enjoyable ride. Deep garnet ciolet color. Aromas of dusty eucalyptus leaf and blackberry yogurt follow through on a soft, supple entry to a dryish medium body with cedar pencil shaving notes and a tangy, dusty spice and tannin fade. Very nice structure and ageability in a northern Rhone style. (tasted on Jan-07-2010)

Deep purple color. Lovely aromas of mocha, chocolate rice crisp bar, and berry coulis follow through on a round, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-full body with great intensity and a nice wave of cedar and spice. Finishes with a long, peppercorn and chewy tannin fade. A fine table with to pair with lamb tagine. (tasted on Jan-07-2010)

Rich aromas of chocolate covered coconut macaroon and boysenberry jam follow through on a round, satiny entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-full body with rich layers of praline and spice. Finishes with long, seamless apple and mocha accented fade with chewy tannins. A hedonistic delight that will shine brightly at the table with any meat dish. (tasted on Nov-30-2009)

Dark ruby garnet color. Aromas of spicy pickled tomatoes and okra and clay follow through on a round, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with a hint of eucalyptus and wintermint. Finishes with a breezy, bright fade with chewy, powdery tannins. Different and a great choice for Kobe burgers or country pate. (tasted on Nov-30-2009)

Deep garnet violet color. Aromas of cured Canadian bacon, boysenberry, faint menthol tobacco, and lightly medicinal herbs follow through on a supple, round entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with very good depth and vibrancy. Finishes with a long tangy berry skin, mossy mineral, and peppery spice fade. Very nice and lively; will work great with spicy lamb dishes. (tasted on Dec-07-2009)

Deep garnet black color. Aromas of warm berry compote, pistachio toffee, plaster,and delicate herbal bark follow through on a silky entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with a soft, even balance and hint of twig. Finishes with a cider, white pepper, and nutskin accented fade. (tasted on Nov-30-2009)

Deep garnet purple color. Aromas of toasted coconut, crayon, and artisan chocolate follow through on a very supple, smooth entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with excellent integration and poise. Finishes with an polished, sweet wood and peppery spice accented fade with juicy tannins. An elegant wine reminiscent of a fine Cote Rotie, but aged in American oak. (tasted on Nov-30-2009)
90 • Pessagno 2006 Idyll Times Vineyard, Syrah, San Benito County $35.
Deep nearly opaque garnet violet black color. Bright aromas of figs, raisins, and dark chocolate are attractive and follow through on a soft, silky entry to a fruity medium-to-full body with lots of ripe fruit and delicate spices. Finishes in a nice, warming peppery craisin compote fade with piquant acidity and light tannins. A sexy, hedonistic syrah with a very zinfandel like character. (tasted on Jan-07-2010)

Nearly opaque violet color. Aromas of melted toffee, plum pudding, and honeycomb follow through on a smooth supple entry to a fruity-yet-dry medium-to-full body with nice depth and balance. Finishes with a hint of spiced apple and nuts on a long, zesty fade. A delicious and table friendly offering, reminiscent of a fine Washington state syrah. (tasted on Nov-30-2009)

Rich aromas of caramelized bacon and black raspberry compote follow through on a round entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with green peppercorn and cocoa notes. Finishes with a chewy tannin and dusty spice fade. A nice table wine to pair with braised meats and stews. (tasted on Nov-30-2009)

Deep ruby color with a violet rim. Aromas of cranberries, pickle, and chocolate covered nuts follow through on a soft, silky entry to a fruity medium body with a sweet watermelon notes and a zesty, refreshing and nutty chewy tannin finish. A delicious sipper, that will go great with gourmet pizzas. (tasted on Nov-30-2009)

Bright aromas of dried dark cherries, spicy vanilla cream, and graphite follow through on a round, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body-to-full with nice depth and smoothness. Finishes with a tangy, craisin, cedar, and dusty spice accented fade. A very tasty sipper or pair with spicy pork dishes. (tasted on Dec-07-2009)

Aromas of berries on the bush, clay, and mixed peppercorns follow through on a round, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium-to-full body with notes of poached apple, violets and cocoa. Finishes with a long, chewy tannin, warming pepper and mineral fade. A very nice table wine to pair with short ribs. (tasted on Jan-07-2010)

Bright aromas of mocha gelato, vanilla wafer, and raspberry sauce follow through on a soft, supple entry to a dry-yet-fruity medium body with tart tangy berry skin and baking spice notes. Finishes with a very firm, drying, and cedary, powdery tannin fade. Classy oak frame and attractive fruit, give this a little time and it will really shine. (tasted on Jan-07-2010)
