90 • Oveja Negra 2008 Single Vineyard, Syrah, Maule Valley $17. Best Buy.
Inky blackish-purple hue. Rich, brooding blackberry cordial and sweet oak aromas. A lush entry leads a chewy, full-bodied palate with opulent fruit flavors and ripe tannins. Has a huge core of fruit and a lengthy oak-tinged finish. Almost Aussie in style. Flashy. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
89 • Korta Vineyards 2007 Reserve, Syrah, Lontue Valley $13.99. Best Buy.
Inky blackish-ruby hue. Perfumed, minty brown spice aromas are oak driven and carry a high-toned black fruit undertone. A rich entry leads a weighty, full-bodied palate with chewy tannins. A flashy, California-leaning style. Big, but balanced. A good choice for winter stews. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
88 • San Rafael 2007 Private Reserve, Syrah, Maule Valley $17.
Deep, inky blackish-purple hue. Ripe blackberry and cocoa aromas carry a sweet oak accent. A rich entry leads a thick, full-bodied palate with soft acidity and chewy tannins. A weighty, forceful, fat style. Try with hearty winter foods. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
84 • Tamaya 2008 Reserva, Syrah, Limari Valley $14.99.
Saturated ruby-purple hue. Perfumed sweet-vanilla oak and briar fruit nose. A rich entry leads a weighty, full-bodied palate with grippy tannins. Substantial, but lean. Shows a green note on the finish. Drink now. (tasted on Oct-06-2009)
