2020 Mules That Rule

Author: Andrew Huber
There’s something special about a Moscow Mule. It’s a simple enough drink--vodka, ginger beer, lime, and mint--but drinking one just feels…right. Maybe it’s the ritual of the gleaming copper cup or the fresh scent of the mint as you take your first sip. Whatever it is, it’s heaven in a glass, and a full year after our last Moscow Mule tasting, we’re back with a whole new lineup of outstanding vodka offerings to try.

Coming in at number four is Dixie Peach Vodka: ultra smooth, flavor-packed, and as at home in a shot glass as it is in a mule mug. Purists might balk at putting a flavored vodka in their mule, but our panelists found the herbal elderflower and eucalyptus aromas to be perfect pairings with the traditional mint bouquet garnish, while the apricot, mango, and peach flavors buzzed well with the ginger beer. It's fun, it's fruity, and it needs to be in your next Moscow Mule.

Since we know you're wondering (we wondered too), 'elyx' is the Swedish word for 'luxury,' and Absolut Elyx in a mule creates just that. A full, rich vodka with citrus and grass aromas, Elyx is perfect for a Moscow Mule. Not quite as gentle as the other Swedish Spirits we've reviewed, Elyx's tingling mouthfeel and amplified spice notes serve to enhance the biting effervescence of ginger beer and make this a perfect cocktail addition to lovers of bold flavors. Still thirsty? Elyx's slight hint of olive also makes a perfect Vodka Martini.

Ketel One Vodka. Everyone knows it, everyone's tried it. It's no surprise that this standby scored second place in our taste test. With hints of cream and vanilla, it was the most neutral vodka we tried, making it all the more important to pair with a high quality Ginger Beer. In addition to its stellar performance in a Moscow Mule, Ketel's attractive price point and near-unlimited versatility make it a longtime favorite.

Our number one, first place Moscow Mule contestant, Enchanted Rock Texas Vodka, is big and bold just like the Lone Star State it hails from. This spirit's huge helping of peppery, spicy ginger flavor kicks like a…well…you know! With lemon peel and juniper aromatics, Enchanted Rock rides well in countless classics; a Collins, a Vesper, or even just on the rocks.
