Phil Kuhl, a Certified Cicerone, has more than ten years of experience in the craft beer industry. Phil’s refined palate and discernible knowledge of beer helped him earn his level-two Cicerone status, the beer certification equivalent to a wine sommelier. Prior to Wirtz Beverage, Phil was responsible for building some of Chicago’s best beer programs including Sheffield Beer and Wine Garden and Fountainhead, both nationally recognized among the industry's as sought-after destinations. His expertise has been widely recognized in the national beer community, leading to his participation as a judge in Tastings.com's internationally recognized World Beer Championships. He’s also served as a beer judge for the Festival of Wood and Barrel Aged Beer and several other prominent competitions, panels and festivals.
At Wirtz Beverage Wisconsin, Phil is responsible for developing on-and-off premise programs and events to aid in beer education as well as brand performance as Wirtz Beverage Wisconsin emerged into the craft beer scene, its second major market in the Midwest. Phil helped launch the Illinois venture in 2013 with new-to-Chicago-market brands like Deschutes, Ballast Point, 4 Hands and Ale Asylum.
